Why Cleaning Matters
A dirty air conditioner works harder, uses more energy, and can harbor mold and bacteria. Regular cleaning maintains efficiency, improves air quality, and extends the unit's lifespan. Most tasks take just 15-30 minutes.
Monthly: Clean or Replace Filters
Clogged filters are the #1 cause of AC inefficiency. For washable filters, rinse with water and let dry completely. For disposable filters, replace when visibly dirty or per manufacturer recommendations (usually every 1-3 months).
Seasonal: Clean the Evaporator Coils
The indoor evaporator coils collect dust and reduce heat transfer. Use a soft brush to gently remove debris, then spray with a no-rinse coil cleaner (available at hardware stores).
Annual: Clean the Condenser Coils
For window units and outdoor central AC compressors, the condenser coils need cleaning too. Turn off power, remove debris with a brush, then gently spray with a garden hose (not a pressure washer).
Clearing the Drain Line
AC units produce condensation that drains through a line. Clogs cause water damage and musty odors. Pour a cup of white vinegar through the drain line every few months to prevent buildup.
